So You Wanna Be Popular?

So for the past couple weeks I have been trying to increase traffic on my blog and I haven’t experienced much success. Today I am choosing to write about what makes a ‘popular blog’ popular. From analyzing the most popular blogs on Technorati’s Top 100 Blogs List I have created a list of ways that I think will make a blog more popular.
  1. Target a variety of people.

For example, the Huffington Post has 6 main categories and over 50 sub-categories. The site is published to accommodate 10 different regions and the information and language is relevant to each specific region. For example, today in the US edition the front page story is different from the España edition. The US editions front page story is about politics and the military (find here), where the España edition’s front page story is about foreign tourism falling in Spain’s capital city (find here).

  2. Post multiple times per day.

Every day when you check BuzzFeed‘s website you will see new information. They post all day and every day; never taking a day off. The mass amount of posts on BuzzFeed makes it easy to spend a lot of time surfing around the site. Also, BuzzFeed’s posts are mostly short and contain lists and lots of memes, gifs, and pictures. I can rationalize reading one of their posts during my day, even when busy, because they are short and to the point.

  3. Have links that stand out and grab people’s attention.

BuzzFeed has ‘Buzz Words’ ex. LOL, win, omg, cute, trashy, fail, and wtf. This makes it easy for people to browse the type of information they are in the mood for.

  4. Post useful information.

The Verge has a category for posts about product comparisons and reviews for software and products. This way people feel that their browsing on your site is productive and it is a learning experience, not just for entertainment.

  5. Have more than just one writer.

All of the blogs on the top 100 list have multiple contributors. Get a group together and create a blog; different people can post on different subjects. Have a place where your followers can send you links to interesting information they found that you could include in your blog.

  6. Write interesting titles that will catch people’s attention & post about things that people will want to read.

Ex. 17 Easy Ways To Be Insanely Productive or 29 Dogs You Won’t Believe Actually Exist These titles create curiosity in people and are the reason people will read your post. Cosmopolitan is really good at titles that you can’t NOT read up on. For example on Facebook they wrote this: Here’s how Jennifer Lawrence is about to make history (link).

  7.  Be unique.

Each ‘popular blog’ offers something a little different than the next. Being a copycat won’t make you popular.

  8.  Use different platforms to communicate with people

This will allow you to connect with more people and increase public awareness of your blog. Posting to Pinterest allows followers to choose which categories they would like to receive posts about. This is a great way to keep followers because they will not be turned off by posts about topics they are not interested in.

The Best Job In The World

Recently, I was watching Late Night with my fiancé, D. After a funny skit D said, “Jimmy Fallon has the best job.” Even though I don’t usually like to admit it, he was right, the man really does have an awesome job.

A brief history:

Jimmy Fallon was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 19, 1974. As a child he loved watching Saturday Night Live (SNL) with his sister and reenacting skits. After experiencing college, Jimmy pursued a career in comedy in Los Angeles. In 1998 Jimmy Fallon joined the cast of SNL (watch his audition here). His impressions landed him a position as a full time cast member on the show in 1999. In 2004 he left SNL and then pursued a career in films; he appeared in Taxi, Fever Pitch, Band of Brothers, Factory Girl, and other movies. In 2009 Fallon became the new host of Late Night, replacing Conan O’Brien. The show has been a huge success and over the years Fallon has been nominated for many awards. He won an Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Picture Editing in 2010 and then in 2012 he won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album ‘Blow Your Pants Off‘. Also, in both 2012 and 2013 he won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host! After 5 great years, Fallon’s time as the host of Late Night is coming to an end and as of February 17th he is taking over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. As we say goodbye to Leno we also welcome Seth Meyers (from SNL) as the new host of Late Night, premiering February 24th. (History information retrieved from here and here)

Here’s a list of some of his best skits (IMO):

  1. History of Rap with Justin Timberlake [parts 1, 2, 3 & 4]
  2. Lip Sync Battle with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Stephen Merchant
  3. At Camp Winnipesaukee with Justin Timberlake singing Africa and I Only Wanna Be With You
  4. Evolution of Mom Dancing with Michelle Obama and Slow Jamming the News with Barack Obama
  5. Fallon as Sara, a teenage girl with a TV show called ‘Ew’ – click here for skit with Channing Tatum
  6. What a twitter conversation would sound like in real life with Justin Timberlake #Hashtag
  7. Jimmy Fallon and The Roots singing ‘We Can’t Stop‘ with Miley Cyrus and ‘Blurred Lines‘ with Robin Thicke
  8. Performing ‘What does the Fox Say?‘ with Ylvis
  9. Joking Bad‘ a parody of the TV show Breaking Bad
  10. Singing ‘Sexy Back‘ with The Ragtime Gals and Justin Timberlake
  11. A compilation of his Music Impressions and Best of Thank You Notes
  12. Late night hashtags #AwkwardDate and Screengrabs

I must say this has taken me a long long long long long long time to write because I have been watching video after video. The whole point of this post is that Jimmy Fallon is awesome and having his job would be sweet. I love watching his show, and as sad as I am that it is coming to an end, I am excited to see him on The Tonight Show. In a recent interview he said that they are “Not going to change anything,” it will be “the same show”, which makes me very happy!

Thanks for reading my blog! If you have some funny Jimmy Fallon skits that I missed please share below in a comment!!
