So You Wanna Be Popular?

So for the past couple weeks I have been trying to increase traffic on my blog and I haven’t experienced much success. Today I am choosing to write about what makes a ‘popular blog’ popular. From analyzing the most popular blogs on Technorati’s Top 100 Blogs List I have created a list of ways that I think will make a blog more popular.
  1. Target a variety of people.

For example, the Huffington Post has 6 main categories and over 50 sub-categories. The site is published to accommodate 10 different regions and the information and language is relevant to each specific region. For example, today in the US edition the front page story is different from the España edition. The US editions front page story is about politics and the military (find here), where the España edition’s front page story is about foreign tourism falling in Spain’s capital city (find here).

  2. Post multiple times per day.

Every day when you check BuzzFeed‘s website you will see new information. They post all day and every day; never taking a day off. The mass amount of posts on BuzzFeed makes it easy to spend a lot of time surfing around the site. Also, BuzzFeed’s posts are mostly short and contain lists and lots of memes, gifs, and pictures. I can rationalize reading one of their posts during my day, even when busy, because they are short and to the point.

  3. Have links that stand out and grab people’s attention.

BuzzFeed has ‘Buzz Words’ ex. LOL, win, omg, cute, trashy, fail, and wtf. This makes it easy for people to browse the type of information they are in the mood for.

  4. Post useful information.

The Verge has a category for posts about product comparisons and reviews for software and products. This way people feel that their browsing on your site is productive and it is a learning experience, not just for entertainment.

  5. Have more than just one writer.

All of the blogs on the top 100 list have multiple contributors. Get a group together and create a blog; different people can post on different subjects. Have a place where your followers can send you links to interesting information they found that you could include in your blog.

  6. Write interesting titles that will catch people’s attention & post about things that people will want to read.

Ex. 17 Easy Ways To Be Insanely Productive or 29 Dogs You Won’t Believe Actually Exist These titles create curiosity in people and are the reason people will read your post. Cosmopolitan is really good at titles that you can’t NOT read up on. For example on Facebook they wrote this: Here’s how Jennifer Lawrence is about to make history (link).

  7.  Be unique.

Each ‘popular blog’ offers something a little different than the next. Being a copycat won’t make you popular.

  8.  Use different platforms to communicate with people

This will allow you to connect with more people and increase public awareness of your blog. Posting to Pinterest allows followers to choose which categories they would like to receive posts about. This is a great way to keep followers because they will not be turned off by posts about topics they are not interested in.
